Music at St. John's
One look inside St. John’s tells the visitor that music has a special place in the life of our congregation. Martin Luther taught his congregation a great deal through song, and more than 500 years later, we continue to do the same. Hymns and liturgy give expression to the Christian’s faith and convey knowledge of it. Those elements are part of every service that takes place here. The congregation’s voice is a primary one, supported by choir and instruments, and together we sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs in the liturgy of the Divine Service.
The choir and organ stand behind the altar, helping both to lead and assist the congregation’s song and, with those in the nave and chancel, surround the altar where we come to meet our Lord at His Table. There we join our voices with one another, and with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven as we praise, laud and magnify God’s glorious name.
God’s language and gift to us in music reaches beyond where words can go. That same gift, as it wells up in us, gives voice in a powerful language that moves not only the mind, but the heart and soul, as well.
Chancel Choir
Open to all in their teens on up. Chancel Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30 pm - 9:15 pm in Music Room and leads the singing at the 9:30 am Divine Service September through June, as well as for feast days. All are welcome to participate in this fun loving group that strives for good music making, too!
The Eagle Eye Ringers
The Eagle Eye Ringers are an advancing hand bell choir that rehearses weekly in the church on Thursdays from 6:30 pm - 7:20 pm, September to June, utilizing the church’s three octaves of Malmark Handbells and 4 octaves of Malmark hand chimes. The bells ring 1-2 times per month in services. The choir also takes part in community events and hopes to soon resume participation in a yearly festival. A commitment to rehearsals and assigned services is particularly important for bell choir members.
St. John's Arts in Mission
An additional offering for elementary aged children, gets underway September 23 from 6-7pm.
The program explores musical arts through singing, bell playing and more, with the goal of preparing children to both grow and contribute their talents to the praise of God in St. John’s Divine Services. A visual arts segment will also be included.
